Weekend Warriors

Our Mission is to Support the Success of Businesses in Our Community.

The Weekend Warrior food program began in the fall of 2017.

The Thompson Business Association was approached by the school administration and were told of a horrible situation.  We were told that some of the students in our school system came to school hungry on Monday mornings.  These students explained to the administration and teachers that they didn’t have very much to eat at home over the weekend.  The school provides breakfast and lunch; and for some, these were the only meals they had available to them all week.  The Thompson Business Association found this situation absolutely unacceptable.

Our group banded together and started providing bags of groceries containing “kid friendly” foods for participating students from Thompson Elementary School.  These bags went home with the children on Fridays and contained items such as cereal, fresh bread, peanut butter and jelly, soup, mac n cheese and snacks.  To take it a step further, we did not just help just the student, but we provided enough in each bag to help feed all the members of their family.  After a successful couple of years, we extended this program to Thompson Middle School.

We are currently feeding 43 families and a total of 195 individuals weekly.

This winter, due to the rising heating oil costs, we started a pilot program to extend our assistance to the senior citizens in the town of Thompson.  We deliver boxes of food containing shelf staples and meal preparation items for those participating.

Currently we have 74 households on this program.  Depending on the success, we will be considering extending this program further.

The funding for this program relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts.  The main event being our Thompson Business Association Golf Tournament which is held every September.  It is a lot of fun, and all profits go directly to the Weekend Warrior program.

Feeding this many people takes a lot of hands.  From the administrators at the school who help to get everyone signed up and the food handed off to the students, to the folks shopping and picking up donations, to the people who put the food away on the shelves, to those who bag and box the food, to the delivery people who take it all where it needs to go, and those that handle everything in between all of this.
